Jonathan Mackenzie creates work which combines art, science and technology. He is especially interested in complexity science, computer sound and dynamic interactive art. He has a PhD from King's College London for work which applies chaos theory to computer sound synthesis and music composition. As well as Biotica he is also working on sound and software projects for William Latham's company, Computer Artworks, and a project called 'Art at the Edge of Chaos' with the Laboratory at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art , Oxford University.
He sees Biotica as an experiment in three main areas; the application of artificial life techniques to create computer algorithms which generate emergent, dynamic, organic forms; the development of a mode of working which is a hybrid of scientific research and art practice; and, as an end result, the creation of an interactive experience which is somewhere between art and scientific spectacle.
